Is IEC 62561 for Lightning Protection System Components (LPSC) mandatory to comply with for achieving Complete Lightning Protection?

Lightning Protection Systems are mandatory for any structure or facility to protect the buildings, inhabitants, and surroundings from Lightning Strikes. Lightning strikes about 20,000 times to 30,000 times during Monsoons. And even a single Lightning Strike, which strikes either structure, human being, or any other object, is deadly without any escape

The only way to protect oneself, your family, and your assets is to install a well-designed Lightning Protection System in compliance with the latest national and international standards. And just designing and installing a system is not enough. We do need to go for a Lighting Protection System installed by using Lighting protection components in adherence to national and international standards.

But then, which system for Lightning Protection components shall one abide by to install a flawless Lightning Protection System which can safeguard loved ones and assets without fail?

Here we are elaborating on the most abide by and the mandatory Lightning Protection International Standard for the Lightning Protection Components one must follow.

The International Electro technical Commission IEC 62561 describes the various tests and requirements for the components required in Lightning Protection System, mentioned in IEC 62305, to achieve a flawless Lightning Protection System for providing complete protection from External and Internal Lightning.

IEC 62561-1 - Components for Connecting Lightning Components: Components connecting various Lightning Protection devices like Lightning Conductor Clamps, Bonding and Earthing Clamps, Equipotential Bonding Bars, Bridging Components, Pipe Clamps, and other brackets required for fixing the components are covered in it.

IEC 62561-2 - Conductors: All types of Conductors for dissipating the Lightning Current that strike at the Lightning Arrester to the ground via Earth Electrodes are part of it. It includes Copper and GI Strips, Aluminium Conductors, Pure Copper Earthing Electrodes, Copper Bonded Earthing Electrodes, GI Earth Electrodes, Pipe-In-Pipe Earthing Electrodes, Copper rods, GI rods, etc. These conductors are the carrier for withstanding the fault current and ultimately grounding it to the Earth network safely before it can do any damage in a manner.

IEC 62561-3 - Isolating Spark Gaps: These are enclosed Spark Gaps,= which separate two metal installations. They protect the equipment we are trying to protect from lightning-induced surges by discharging the lightning current to the ground without any damage. These are generally used in explosive environments to discharge the Lightning Current without any arcing and avoid any chance of spark in the explosive environments. These Isolating Spark Gaps provide Lightning Protection Equipotential Bonding by safely discharging the Lightning over voltages.

IEC 62561-4 Conductor Fasteners: The conductor fasteners are used in traditional construction methods. For air network design, metal clips, and bare conductors are used to promote effective current sharing across the roof. But in the down conductor system, non-metallic clips/fasteners are used as Conductor fasteners, which are also PVC-covered conductors in the down conductor system.

IEC 62561-5 Earth Pits: Earth Pits are the pit/hole made in the ground to house the earthing electrode and backfill compound/ground-enhanced compound to install earthing. These earth pits are in accordance with the length and dia of the earthing electrode used in the earthing. The Earthing electrodes could be pipes, rods, or plates as per the requirement and feasibility of the site.

IEC 62561-6 Lightning Strike Counters: The Lightning Strike Counters register the total number of times the Lightning arrester safely captured the Lightning leaders coming from the clouds and grounded it. It also specifies how many lightning strikes LPS has handled safely by sending/grounding the lightning current to the earthing network via a down conductor. The Lightning Strike Counters are digital as well as manual.

IEC 62561-7 Earth Enhancing Compounds: Also known as Back Fill Compounds or Ground Enhancement Materials, these compounds reduce the soil resistance of the material surrounding the earthing electrode to let it safely ground the lightning current in a fraction of a second without permitting it do any damage to any structure or surroundings.

Lightning Protection Systems installed with components not complying with IEC 62561 are useless and should not be relied upon. Such LPS cannot provide you with any level of protection, no matter howsoever good Lightning Arresters you have procured and howsoever well your Lightning Protection System is designed.

Considering the above, it is a must to demand Lightning Protection System designed in compliance with IEC 62305 and installed strictly with the components complying with IEC 62561.
