Monsoon is the most beautiful gift of nature!
Monsoon not only brings us joy, happiness, and fun besides rain, water, and greenery, but it also brings deadly lightning strikes, which kill thousands of people every year rather more, in addition to destroying and setting ablaze thousands of properties, structures, facilities, and much more.
To stay safe, secure, and fearless, one must protect its family, property, and belongings from the deadly lightning strike before it strikes one's door. Lightning here or there usually strikes daily, but during Monsoon, it strikes daily at an average rate of 20,000+ times, which is deadly to risk.
Being responsible people, we must act beforehand to protect our family, property, and belongings from damage, fire, deaths, or accidental losses happening because of Lightning Strikes. We cannot control nature and natural disasters but can take precautionary measures to protect ourselves from their deadly impacts.
Types of Lightning Arresters: There are two types of Lightning Arresters. Conventional Spike type Copper/Copper bonded/Aluminum Lightning Arresters and modern ESE Lightning Arresters with wide areas of protective coverage. For detailed information, visit our exclusive blog for Lightning Arresters. Here we are giving a slight awareness on both.
Conventional Lightning Arresters: Conventional Lightning Arresters were used in earlier days. They provide protection when lightning strikes them directly. They are pointed at one end and are connected to the ground earthing via a down conductor to drain off the lightning current transferred to it by the lightning strike. The down conductors could be Copper/Aluminum/GI Earthing Strips or Aluminum Earth Wires.
Conventional Lightning Arresters could be a single rod, or with a single spike or 4 to 5 pointed spikes pointing in different directions. These spikes are mounted over a small hollow sphere. These spikes are kept pointed to make lightning bolts strike them, which are about to strike the area closer to the lightning arresters. The Lightning strikes always strike the shining and sharp objects first and thus hit the Lightning arresters first rather than striking the structure, somewhere else in the near vicinity.
ESE Lightning Arresters: ESE Lightning Arresters are Early Streamer Emission Lightning Arresters. These modern-age Lightning Arresters ionize during stormy/rainy weather to emit a stream of ions in the air. These streams of ions are known as down leaders, and they travel upwards toward the clouds. These down leaders intercept the lightning discharge coming downwards from the clouds somewhere midway before they become strong enough to be a striking thunderbolt to strike somewhere on the ground and create havoc. The down leaders, in this way, draws and channel the lightning discharge to the ground earthing via a down conductor connected between the lightning arrester and the ground earthing network.
The ESE Lightning Arresters not only save the structures they are mounted on but also protect the surrounding environment by drawing the lightning current discharges striking their protective area coverage.
Lightning Protection Systems: Lightning Arresters cannot protect on their own. They are installed as an integral part of Lightning Protection Systems. Well-designed Lightning Protection Systems keeping in consideration all aspects of national and international standards are a must for a Lightning Protection System to provide flawless protection against lightning strikes.
Even a good lightning arrester installed in a poorly designed Lightning Protection System is useless and is of no good. Therefore, always get your Lightning Protection System designed by qualified experts with a proven track record of designing and installing Lightning Protection Systems.
Surge Protection Devices (SPD): Lightning Protection Systems incorporates both Lightning Arresters and Surge Protection Devices, in addition to a good Chemical Earthing network to provide complete protection from lightning strikes. The Lightning Protection Systems without SPDs are incomplete and don't protect the connected appliances or equipment inside the structure. The Lightning Arresters protect the structures/buildings from external lightning strikes, and the Surge Protection Devices protect the electrical/electronics/digital appliances/equipment from high voltage surges and transient voltages arising from lightning strikes.
